HSLANJ is happy to announce that the MLA 4 credit hands-on computer class, HSLANJ thanks LibraryLinkNJ and the Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) for their support of this class.

The class will be taught by Lydia Collins, the Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator at MAR, at two New Jersey sites asfollows:

Wednesday, June 19, 2013, Morris County Library Training Lab, Whippany, NJ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

Thursday, June 20, 2013 Mercer County Library, Lawrence Branch, Lawrenceville, NJ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

The class is open to interested librarians from member libraries of LibraryLinkNJ and to HSLANJ members.

" From A(norexia) to Z(its)" can also be counted as a four credit Specialty class for the MLA Consumer Health Information Specialization program.

This class is designed for public librarians and secondary school librarians, teachers, nurses, and counselors. The hands-on class will present an overview of health information needs of teenagers and their information seeking behaviors; review communication skills needed during reference interviews with teenagers; and explore credible health information resources that are designed for teens.

This is a rare opportunity for a team from your school to learn how to design and implement Guided Inquiry, a method that transforms the way students engage information to build critical thinking, creativity, and deep understanding for college and career readiness.

Based on the extensive research of CiSSL, Guided Inquiry provides a visionary, constructivist approach to addressing Common Core State Standards and developing students as reflective learners in the process of seeking, evaluating and using a variety of sources of information.

The Institute Curriculum

The 3-day Institute will address the following:

What is Guided Inquiry? Why now?
Research foundation of Guided Inquiry
CiSSL research that supports Guided Inquiry
Designing and implementing Guided Inquiry in K-12 schools
Integrating information literacy by learning from a variety of sources of information
Promoting creativity, critical thinking, and preparing students for college and careers through Guided Inquiry
Developing instructional partnerships between teachers, librarians, administrators, parents and the community
Assessing learning through Guided Inquiry

Institute Outcomes

Each participant will come away with:

An understanding of Guided Inquiry: Research foundation and design framework
A knowledge of the CiSSL research in Guided Inquiry
Ability to design and implement Guided Inquiry learning
Strategies for information literacy through learning from a variety of sources of information
Ability to assess learning outcomes of Guided Inquiry
Strategies to develop an inquiry community in your school
Capacity to collaborate in instructional teams for guiding inquiry
Prototypes of learning materials and assessment tools for Guided Inquiry

Preparation & Follow-up

Participants are asked to bring the details of a curriculum unit, including Common Core Standards to be addressed, which they will develop as a Guided Inquiry project throughout the Institute. Institute staff will follow up periodically with participating teams.

Continuing Education

A Certificate of Completion will be provided to each participant and may be evidence of professional development by your school administration.

Fees

$550 per person includes:

All instruction
2 nights accommodation July 10 and 11 at the conference center in a double room with bath (or increase the fee to $900 per person for a private room). Because space is limited, preference will be given to teams willing to share.
All meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, beginning with continental breakfast on July 10 and ending with a full breakfast on July 12
All snacks and breaks each day.

Additional Fee

Add $125 per person for dinner and accommodations if you plan to arrive on July 9 to be ready for the 9:00 AM start on July 10.

Applications

Public and independent schools are encouraged to participate by sending a team of 2, 3 or 4 members consisting of:

The school librarian and
One or more classroom teachers
An administrator (curriculum coordinator or director of instruction or principal) may join the team on site or virtually

Please complete the application by April 12, 2013. One application per team, please. Space is limited so apply early. Teams that are accepted for the institute will be required to make a financial commitment by May 13, 2013. A limited amount of scholarship assistance may be available to qualifying teams.
